For the first five years of his life, a gorilla by the name of Kwibi was raised by a man, Damian Aspinall, in an animal park in England. He was then released to live wild in a jungle in Africa. Five years after his release, Damian went to find and visit him there. Their incredible reunion was captured on video. If you’ve haven’t seen the video, watch it now (it’s only four minutes long). It’s one of the most powerful and genuine displays of love I’ve had the honour to witness. It demonstrates what’s possible between an animal and a human – a kind of love that’s so big, so pure and so beautifully simple. It’s different than human love. When one human loves another human, it always gets messy. Our words and our actions don’t express the love we feel. We get stuck in our heads, instead of living in our hearts. We build walls of self-protection and hold so much back. We lock love out, rather than letting love in. On top of it all, we’re never satisfied. We want people (especially the ones we love most) to be different, to be more. We don’t know how to love each other, just as we are. Animals are different. They love so openly, so freely, and truly with no conditions. Did you see how Kwibi held onto Damian? How he called for him in the night? How pure is your love? Do you share the love you feel? Is it possible to share it more?
The love animals share with humans is incredibly pure. Learn from them. Take down your walls. Open your heart. Let the love flow. Nothing is more beautiful than a love that is true.
